One brand could not keep its TikTok Shop switched on for more than two weeks at a time, for six months straight. Another kept getting turned off over negative reviews on the platform, while it sat on 100,000 five star reviews on its own website.

Neither had a product problem. Both were tripped up by the setup most brands rush through before the first creator posts.

The month one problem

A new shop is on probation from the day it opens. It starts with daily order caps and climbs out by shipping fast, answering every message and keeping its numbers clean.

The exit has been set at 60 days or 500 completed orders, as long as seller caused cancellations stay under 2.5%, late shipping under 4% and seller caused returns and refunds under 1%. Those terms date from May 2024, so check the current ones in Seller Center, but the shape holds.

The first month is a test you are graded on, and most of the grade is decided by setup you did or skipped before launch.

Shops that stall usually hit one of five walls, which are fees they did not price in, listings that sync badly, slow shipping, a slipping shop score or a flagged claim.

Why new shops get held back

The fee looks small. TikTok keeps a referral fee on each completed sale, 6% in the US as of September 2026, so on a $40 order it keeps $2.40, and other estimates run from 5% to 8%. New sellers can pay 3% for 30 days after the first sale, if that sale comes within 60 days of signup.

The fee is never the whole take, because creator commission sits on top of it.

With a 10 to 20% commission, the total take on an affiliate sale can pass 18%, and a 20% commission plus an 8% fee takes more than a quarter of the price before product cost. A new commission rate takes 5 days to apply on target plans and 30 days on open plans, so a wrong launch rate stays wrong for weeks.

Cash is slower than it looks. Money arrives 1 to 31 days after delivery, not after the order, then 1 to 3 days for the bank, with stronger shop scores paid faster.

Listings break quietly. If you sync from Shopify, the app sends every product by default, and a SKU mismatch can zero out your TikTok stock overnight with no warning. One perfume was rejected for a missing size unit and went live once it was renamed with 100ml.

The setup to finish before you open

  • Paperwork. Have your legal name, tax ID (EIN), owner photo ID, a business bank account and a warehouse address ready. A bank account name that does not match your signup name makes payouts fail, and that is where most new shops get stuck. For an LLC, state papers alone fail, so add an IRS document such as a CP 575.
  • Brand authorization. List only what you own a registered, not pending, trademark for, or hold complete reseller paperwork for. One unauthorized listing can freeze payouts or ban the shop.
  • Restricted categories. Supplements are invite only in the US, and the platform judges the formula itself, so confirm approval before you recruit a single creator.
  • Listings. Switch off the products you do not want synced, audit every SKU and variant, and place a test order before any ad spend. Aim for a Good grade on each, with a detailed description, every category field filled, a clean main image on pure white, at least five photos and a short video that shows the product in the first two seconds.
  • One listing, many variants. A snack brand started with one listing per flavor, so a video about one flavor could only sell that flavor. Putting the whole range into one listing raised order value and cut sampling cost.
  • Shipping. Use the platform's own fulfillment for your top 20% of products by revenue. Fulfilled by TikTok products are said to see about 20% better conversion, and 2 day delivery converts 40% better than 7 or more days. If you use a 3PL, 24 to 48 hour pick and pack is the floor, because the algorithm can send a month of orders in a weekend.
  • Stock. Hold 1,000+ units of each main SKU, and do not put all of it in reach of one viral moment. With 10,000 units in the warehouse, list 6,000 or 7,000 and release the rest by hand.
  • Claims. Rewrite claims before you list, not after a violation. Your shop now answers for what your creators say, so approve their claims before they film.

Then watch the health numbers every week.

Measure Keep it
Seller fault cancel rate Under 2.5%
Order defect rate Under 1%
Late dispatch Under 4%
Shop score Above 4.0, aim for 4.5 to 5.0

Add tracking within 5 business days or the order is canceled, and answer a buyer's cancel request within 24 hours or it is approved for them. Both feed the score.

How shops that stayed on learned it

One seller learned about the SKU check when its TikTok stock went to zero overnight, and now audits SKUs as step one of every launch and after any catalog change. Reseller shops doing $100K a month went dark overnight over a missed authorization letter, which is why the careful ones renew 30 days before expiry with a calendar reminder.

Overselling is the fastest way to a seller cancellation, which is why the shops that last cap the stock they show, not just the stock they hold.

When a video sold more than one brand could pack, it switched on pre-orders, which can stretch the shipping window from 3 days to 7, 14 or 30. That brand was out of stock for about six months of its first year and kept its customers by posting open, frequent updates on TikTok, because losing a few buyers beats a violation.

Another brand found that winning on TikTok broke its customer support, and took on 40 new support reps in a month.

What to fix this week

If your shop is not open yet, do the paperwork and the brand authorization first, because those are the walls that freeze money. Then grade every listing and fix the Poor ones before the Fair ones.

If you are already open, pull the four health numbers today and compare them to the table. Place a test order on every hero variant, and price one sale with the fee and your commission stacked so you know your margin.

Setup is boring, and it is the cheapest month of TikTok Shop you will ever have, so finish it before the creators show up.

The rest of the system, from samples to creators, is in our TikTok Shop affiliate playbook, and what to list first is in which products sell.

Once the shop is ready for creators, we find and manage the affiliates for you, paid on commission.
